Our History

Klaus Thormählen GmbH is a successful, internationally active rail welding company with headquarters in Bad Oldesloe. “Treading new paths” – this leitmotif has determined the company’s self-image from the very beginning and has proven itself successfully several times. In particular, the technology of mobile flash butt welding and the “seamless rail process chain” characterise the business activities of Klaus Thormählen GmbH.

Mobile flash butt welding has made it possible to transport the rail lengths directly from the rolling mill to the construction site and to weld them on site – without additives. The detour to the welding plant has thus become just as superfluous as the subsequent loading onto long rail transport vehicles. Another special feature of this system is the automatic alignment of the rails. The advantage for our customers: In addition to the considerable time savings, the costs are reduced by an average of 40% compared to the conventional method while maintaining a consistently high quality of execution.

All track construction and maintenance services from a single source – Klaus Thormählen GmbH unfolds its bundled competence in the process chain of seamless rail. Together with our partners, we take over the complete handling of all tasks, from delivery of the rail to unloading and welding on site. For the client there is only one contact person. With this process chain, a quality system has been developed that meets the highest demands and includes complete control of the individual work steps.

On 01.06.89 Thormählen Schweißtechnik GmbH was founded. The successful start was followed in 1990 by the foundation of the branches in Berlin and Halle as well as the founding of the BUG shareholding. As early as 1992, the expansion of the company progressed by establishing a further branch in Cologne.

A cooperation agreement was signed in 1993 with the Swiss company H. A. Schlatter AG, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electrical resistance welding systems. In the course of this agreement, the first mobile welding system was approved in 1995 after 6 months of testing. In 2000 the corresponding certification and the award of the quality prize of the Überwachungsgemeinschaft Gleisbau (ÜGG) took place.

In 2006 the business was taken over by Klaus Thormähen GmbH. One year later, the cooperation company THORMAHLEN-TCD was founded in Ankara, as was another branch of Klaus Thormählen GmbH in Israel.
